The residents of Duffryn, Newport have been forced to use the Duffryn District Heating system, which we cannot opt out of. For over 10 years, we have been paying 100%–170% more per kWh than British Gas customers—despite being told this system was a cheaper and sustainable alternative. Now, Newport City Homes (NCH) is increasing prices again, adding:

Tenants 

🔥 A new daily standing charge of 32p—even if we don’t use the system!
🔥 An increase in the kWh price from 9.51p to 10.36p!

Home owners

🔥 A new daily standing charge of 93p —even if they don’t use the system!
🔥 An increase in the kWh price from 9.51p to 13.93p

Residents already struggling with rising costs will now be forced to pay even more for heating they can’t afford. Many rely on the system only for hot water and use alternative heating, yet they will still face a daily charge. This is unfair, unaffordable, and unacceptable.

Some residents are already going without heating during the coldest months, unable to keep their homes warm. Instead of offering a fair solution, NCH is making it even harder for families, pensioners, and vulnerable tenants—pushing them further into fuel poverty.

What is at stake?
If we do nothing, tenants will be locked into higher bills with no say in how prices are set.
NCH has refused to justify why Duffryn residents have been overcharged for over a decade.
They are refusing to hold a public meeting, avoiding transparency and accountability.
This is not just about this price increase—it’s about years of overcharging and a complete lack of fairness. If we let this go unchallenged, NCH will continue raising costs while ignoring the concerns of tenants.

Why is now the time to act?
We must act NOW to stop these unfair price hikes before they come into effect. We demand:

✅ A breakdown of where our money has gone after 10 years of overcharging.
