Stop the unfair application of strict dmv point penalties

Stop the unfair application of strict dmv point penalties
The Issue
As a 21-year-old living in New York State, facing the reality of having my license suspended over minor infractions such as a busted taillight or driving just 5mph over the speed limit is terrifying. This situation threatens my ability to work, as most jobs are out of reach without a vehicle, and it could destroy my income and my ability to provide for myself and my family. I'm sure I am not alone in this struggle.
The current DMV laws enforce overly strict point penalties that hit low-income and middle-class citizens the hardest. A single mistake on the road shouldn't cost someone their livelihood. Low-income communities often don't have the resources to dispute these penalties or afford the insurance rate hikes they trigger.
Statistics show that insurance premiums can increase by up to 30% with even a single infraction on your driving record. For families already stretched thin financially, these additional costs can be devastating. Penalties should encourage safe driving, not be a disproportionate financial burden that mostly impacts those with limited means.
We are calling on New York State legislators to revise these laws. We propose the following changes: implementing a more forgiving point system that accounts for minor traffic violations, offering affordable traffic education programs as an alternative to point penalties, and creating a cap on the increase of insurance premiums for minor infractions.
By implementing these changes, we can ensure fairer treatment for all drivers, promote safe driving habits without indulging in punitive financial consequences, and help preserve the livelihoods of countless families across New York State.
Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to reconsider these unjust DMV policies and work towards a more equitable system for everyone.
