The issue

Many I know have personally experienced the discomfort and fear that can result from police aggression toward trans individuals, and this is a reality many people in the community are subjected to on a regular basis. For the trans community, the recent proposal for a comprehensive Digital ID, which will link identity documents such as Medicare and Driver's licenses, impacts the community directly and negatively. It exposes trans people even further to the risk of discrimination and police violence, as trans identities will become immediately identifiable all at once through these interconnected systems. Whilst this is an Australian proposition by Minister Katy Gallagher an example of discrimination with the United States Transgender Survey 2015 stating that 58% of trans people faced some form of harassment over ID, this would become a one stop shop for transphobic police to find out if they clocked one of the trans community.

Any move toward the enhancement of this discrimination is unacceptable and counterproductive to our quest for fundamental rights and freedom. It's time to reconsider this proposal for a digital ID system that involuntarily outs trans individuals and disregards the right to privacy.

We urge Minister Katy Gallagher and the rest of the Federal Government to reconsider, to protect the lives and wellbeing of trans people nationwide. Please sign this petition and stand with us against this systemic transphobia and toward a safer, more inclusive society for all.
