The Issue

We the citizens below are AGAINST the proposal to transfer federal wildlife refuge land—currently held for the benefit of all Americans—to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, to be held in trust for the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe.     The proposed transfer of the Dungeness Wildlife Refuge and Protection Island Refuges to the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe under the Land Transfer Act of 2026  is not in the best interest of preserving these vital natural habitats for future generations. While the co-management of these areas was initially introduced as a collaborative effort, this transition to sole management by the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe raises significant concerns about public access and conservation priorities.

The Dungeness Wildlife Refuge and Protection Island Refuges are treasured parts of America’s natural heritage, offering sanctuary to unique flora and fauna. These refuges have long been managed with the view of preserving these ecosystems for all Americans, ensuring that the public can enjoy and appreciate them.  Shifting ownership solely to the Sovereign  Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe is not in the best interests of American citizens.

Additionally, these refuges hold significant ecological, recreational, and educational value. The potential for altering their ownership could undermine the integrity of these values. Americans have treasured these landscapes for generations, and any drastic changes in their ownership should be carefully considered and involve public consultation.

We understand the importance of recognizing tribal sovereignty and the historic injustices tribes have faced. However, changes of this magnitude require a transparent process and assurance that all stakeholders, including the public, have their voices heard and respected.   The city council of Sequim has not held any meetings asking for the public's opinions and wishes.

We urge lawmakers and relevant authorities to stop the Land Transfer Act of 2026 of the Dungeness Wildlife Refuge and Protection island Refuges, to any separate Sovereign Entity.

Please sign this petition to voice your concerns and demand a more comprehensive evaluation of this proposed land transfer, ensuring our treasured natural refuges remain public, protected, and accessible to all.
