The Issue

Frenchtown, Montana is a place we hold dear — a tranquil, close-knit community where safety, peace, and natural beauty are a way of life. Our town’s charm is rooted in its small-town feel, and nowhere is this more apparent than at the entry and exit to our valley, a bustling center connecting our community between two school campuses. Here, students traverse the well-used bike path and young drivers practice their skills on the road, making this area critical for our families’ everyday lives.

The proposed development of a Town Pump truck stop at 17000-15882 Frenchtown Frontage Rd threatens this precious balance. Truck stops, by their nature, bring a slew of challenges that our town is ill-equipped to handle — 24 Hour noise with truck refrigeration units and Jake brakes, pollution, smog and water table contamination, bright, intrusive lighting, and potentially, a rise in crime and trafficking activities. These developments typically attract heavy traffic leading to congestion and endangering our community’s safety, particularly our young students who navigate these roads daily.  This is a residential area, and will affect the home owners with a multitude of challenges as well.

There is a real fear that this truck stop will destroy the peace and safety that Frenchtown residents cherish. Not only would it cast a shadow over the heart of our valley, but it threatens to transform our town into something unrecognizable.

It is crucial to consider the long-term implications that this development may have on our environment and quality of life. The increased pollution associated with a truck stop could have detrimental effects on our air quality, further eroding the natural beauty that surrounds us and adding a potentially harmful health risk to our community.  The water table is very shallow at this location and is connected to protected water sources.  Leaks and spills will travel directly to the school, Frenchtown Pond, Edith Creek, Mill Creek, and and the Clark Fork River.

We urge local authorities to deny the approval of this development. Instead, let’s explore alternative locations or invest in projects that align with the values and safety of Frenchtown’s residents. We implore decision-makers to prioritize our community’s welfare and the safety of our children over commercial interests. Every signature moves us one step closer to preserving the integrity and tranquility of Frenchtown.

Please sign this petition to voice your opposition to the development of the Town Pump truck stop and help protect our beloved community.
