Stop the TopCat River Market on NC 107 and S. River Road in Jackson County, NC

Stop the TopCat River Market on NC 107 and S. River Road in Jackson County, NC
The Issue
We the undersigned are opposed to the construction of a gas station at NC 107 and S. River Road for the following reasons:
-Concerns about contamination of the Tuckasegee River from land disturbance, fuel, and litter
-Danger to the tourism industry, trout fishing and local economies from potential water contamination
-Risk to motorists at this already dangerous intersection
-Disturbance to the aesthetics of the existing green space between Sylva & Cullowhee
-Interruption in serenity of the river experience from the perspective of fishermen, kayakers, rafters and tubers
-Potential of future storms like Helene to cause catastrophic damage due to proximity to river
Further Details
The water quality of the Tuckasegee River is vital to the economic health of the County. Tourism is the economic driver of our region. The section of the Tuckasegee River between the proposed gas station site (at the corner of NC 107 and South River Road) and the old dam site in Dillsboro is heavily stocked with three species of native trout and is one of the most heavily fished streams in the area. According to the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, fishing is a $1.38 billion industry in WNC and for every dollar spent directly on fishing, approximately $2 is spent in other local businesses. We cannot to afford harm the crown jewel of Jackson County tourism.
Contamination of the river is likely from a high traffic area where fuel, litter and debris can make their way into the water downstream. Additionally, the project calls for a 25,000 gallon gasoline underground storage system. The disturbance of land while installing this storage system alone is enough cause for alarm.
The intersection of NC 107 and S. River Road has been described as dangerous by local residents.
Currently, this section of river is a popular destination for fisherman, kayakers, rafters and tubers with locations upstream for putting in and locations downstream for taking out. A gas station in the center of this popular section would change the aesthetics, increase noise, smell and light pollution and negatively impact the experience for those seeking solace in our natural spaces.
Hurricane Helene decimated counties adjacent to Jackson County. There have been two “hundred year storms” in Haywood County in the past several years. Jackson County has been lucky, but there are no guarantees we won’t be affected in the future. Putting a business with the potential for negative impact to the river right on the river’s bank is reckless.
