Petition: Stop the Sysco-Jetro/Restaurant Depot Merger – Save Our Independent Kitchens

Sysco, the world’s largest food distributor, has officially announced a massive $3 billion deal to acquire Jetro, the parent company of Restaurant Depot. This isn't just a corporate merger; it is a direct threat to the survival of every independent restaurant, food truck, mom-and-pop diner, and local bakery in America.

Why This Matters:

Let’s go deeper on this deal because we all need to understand what’s actually about to happen to our food. Restaurant Depot wasn't just another food wholesaler. It was where your local taco shop, your neighborhood diner, and your favorite brunch spot went when Sysco’s prices were too high or their deliveries were late or the terms didn'tfit in the slow season.

With 55% of independent restaurants in America located within a 30-minute drive of a Restaurant Depot, this store was key to their survival.  

Sysco will ruin this business and raise prices of food for all, including cinsumers!

The Facts of the Deal:

 Monopoly Power: Sysco is paying $3 billion in cash to take over Jetro’s operations. By absorbing its biggest competitor in the "cash and carry" space, Sysco is eliminating the primary alternative for small business owners.

 The End of Price Competition: Restaurant Depot provided an outlet for chefs to shop for what they needed, when they needed it, at transparent prices.

Without that competition, Sysco will have the power to dictate prices across the entire industry. Not only that they will control manufacturers and farmers!

Targeting the Little Guy: This acquisition specifically targets the 140+ locations that serve the heart of our communities. When one giant corporation controls both the delivery trucks and the wholesale aisles, small businesses lose all bargaining power.

The Consequences:

If this deal is allowed to proceed, the impact will be felt on every street corner in America:

Skyrocketing Costs: Without Restaurant Depot as a price check, independent owners will be forced to pay whatever Sysco demands.

 The Death of the Food Truck and Bakery: Small-scale operations that don't meet Sysco’s high "minimum order" requirements rely on Restaurant Depot to stay in business. If those doors close or prices spike, your favorite local spots will disappear.

  Food Insecurity for Small Business: When Sysco has a bad week or a supply chain issue, there will be nowhere left for the "little guy" to go to fill their shelves.

To every chef, every line cook, every food truck owner, and every person who loves their local food scene: We must fight this deal. We cannot allow the "Amazon-ification" of our food supply. We need competition. We need our escape hatch. We need to keep our lifelines independent.
