Stop the sweeps in downtown Victoria, BC

Stop the sweeps in downtown Victoria, BC
The Issue
Every day, I witness first-hand the devastating effects that the ongoing sweeps in downtown Victoria, BC have on the unhoused community. During my practicum, I work closely with individuals who are living on the streets. I see how Bylaw and Police officers routinely confiscate their few belongings, which include items necessary for their daily survival, such as clothing, blankets, and essential personal items.
These sweeps are not only disruptive, but they are also inhumane and violate the dignity of those who are already in vulnerable situations. Imagine having your personal possessions taken away with nowhere to retrieve them. This is a reality for many who suffer under these policies. I believe we can do better as a community, by supporting rather than punishing those who are homeless.
We need to advocate for more compassionate solutions. We call on the Victoria City Council to halt these inhumane sweeps immediately and to invest in long-term strategies that focus on housing first initiatives, increased funding for mental health and addiction services, and community-based support programs.
By signing this petition, you are standing in solidarity with the unhoused community of Victoria. Together, we can urge our policymakers to make a change that respects and ensures the dignity of every individual. Let's work towards a Victoria where everyone has the opportunity for a safe and stable life. Please sign this petition today and help put an end to the sweeps.
