Stop the staffing cuts for Montclair Fire Department

Stop the staffing cuts for Montclair Fire Department
The Issue

Growing up in Montclair, New Jersey, I've witnessed firsthand how critical and life-saving our Montclair Fire Department (MFD) services are. This isn't just a government service; for the over 41,000 residents of Montclair, the 8,000 residents of Glen Ridge, and parts of Montclair State University, it's a lifeline.
In 2025, the Township of Montclair took a strategic step by commissioning a detailed study on the operations of the Montclair Fire Department from New Jersey Community Solutions LLC. The findings were clear: maintaining and even enhancing staffing levels is paramount for the safety and effectiveness of our fire services. Despite these expert recommendations, some members of the Township Council are moving forward with plans to reduce Fire Department staffing and brown out a Truck Company.
This decision not only defies expert counsel but jeopardizes public safety. Each firefighter plays an essential role in ensuring quick response times and comprehensive coverage in emergencies. Cutting staffing means longer response times, fewer resources, and increased risk for our community members.
Consider the impact on local schools, businesses, and seniors. Fire department staffing does not just affect those directly saved from fires but plays a crucial role in community-wide safety preparations and emergency management. A delay can be catastrophic, resulting in preventable loss of life and property.
Montclair has long been a beacon of community solidarity and proactive safety measures. In these challenging times, it is crucial that we stand together, not just to defend our town's well-being but to demand accountability from our local representatives.
Join me in urging the Township Council to halt these cuts and prioritize the safety and security of all Montclair and Glen Ridge residents. Our firefighters are our first line of defense—let's ensure they're able to protect us effectively. Sign this petition to make your voice heard and ensure the safety of our community remains the top priority.
