Our ancestral waters are suffocating under a mountain of corporate poison. In my home city of Warri, Nigeria, the rivers that once sustained our grandfathers have been turned into plastic graveyards. We are surrounded by a relentless, toxic tide of single-use cellophanes, multi-layer sachets, and plastic cans.
This is an ecological crisis we did not create, yet we face its most horrifying consequences daily. The Coca-Cola Company alone pumps out a staggering 130 billion single-use plastic bottles every single year—that is over 350 million plastic cans invading the Earth every single day.
For decades, we have been aggressively greenwashed and guilt-tripped by multi-billion-dollar marketing campaigns. They spent billions making us believe that pollution is a "consumer behavior" problem, forcing us to bear the moral burden of an indestructible material that they designed to be completely unrecyclable.
This is no longer just an environmental crisis; it is a direct assault on human life. Peer-reviewed global science has officially found microplastics embedded deep within human blood and every single human placenta tested. The synthetic chemicals of global billionaires are now crossing into the wombs of our mothers, poisoning our unborn children before they even take their first breath.
We refuse to act as unpaid janitors to hide the guilt of these manufacturers. Under the legal mandate of Nigeria’s newly gazetted National Environmental (Plastic Waste Control) Regulations, 2026, we demand an absolute systemic shift:
1. A Total Legislative Ban: We demand a complete global and nationwide ban on all non-biodegradable packaging, thin-film nylons, and single-use plastic cans. Corporations must shift 100% of their production to nature-friendly, earth-compostable alternatives.
2. The Sacred Digestibility Rule: Our law for the future is simple: If nature cannot return to nature safely—if the fishes, animals, and soil cannot eat it—it must not be produced.
3. Fund Buy-Back Hubs During the Phase-Out: During the immediate transition period, brands must use their massive profits to fund localized neighborhood kiosks to put a clear financial redemption value on all existing post-consumer plastic waste.
