Petition updateStop the Slaughter of Mule Deer on Catalina IslandWhat do we want? CEQA! When do we want it? NOW!
Coalition to Save Catalina Island DeerAvalon, CA, United States

Friends old and new!  Thank you for joining us in our fight to stop the Catalina Island Conservancy in their LATEST attempt to inhumanely slaughter every mule deer on Catalina Island.

For those who have followed our journey over these last 2 1/2 years you know that this story has had LOTS of twists and turns.  From our earliest days when the Conservancy tried to rush the approval of yet another application for a Scientific Collection Permit (SCP) through the California Department of Fish and Wildlife without any meaningful public input to today, where we stand right NOW at the precipice of HUGE developments we will share with you as soon as we are able. The situation? The Catalina Island Conservancy was granted a new type of permit called a Restoration Management Permit (RMP).  However, they were also able to get an exemption from the legal requirement known as CEQA.  The is the California Environmental Quality Act which was passed in 1970. This law mandates a rigorous and thorough examination of any major proposed project to identify, disclose, and mitigate significant environmental impacts that such a project my incur.  This is a common sense requirement that we have every right to demand for such a historic and unprecedented decision such as the one we are fighting now. A large and rapidly growing chorus of citizens, senior LA County Fire Department officials and our elected representatives all agree that the right thing to do is take a HUGE step back and follow California law.  It's the right thing to do.

We are here for you AND the deer in the name of transparency, objective science, and genuine public engagement.

What we can tell you today is that we have been working hard this whole time and we are READY!  Big money buys a lot of influence but we are fighting back. We continue to develop the relationships with our Partners such as HOWL for Wildlife, Safari Club International, The California Rifle and Pistol Association, the National Humane Society of the United States and many more.  We continue to fight for access to publicly available records.  We help you know what actions you can take and we engage our local community. We will continue to hold the Catalina Island Conservancy accountable for their actions.

Thank you for your support!!!  Stay tuned!!!!!!!
