Today we’ve launched a new report that does what the authorities have failed to do for decades: it shows exactly where, why, and how pollution from septic tanks and private systems in the Windermere catchment can be stopped.
This is a practical blueprint for action.
- We’ve mapped priority locations across the catchment — from Esthwaite to Fell Foot, and Langdale to Troutbeck — where connecting properties to mains sewerage would deliver the greatest environmental return.
- We’ve set out a step-by-step approach to target the highest-risk areas first, based on visitor pressure, proximity to the lake, and the number of properties that could be connected.
- We’ve shown how existing legislation, Section 101A of the Water Industry Act, can help to fund these connections, with the main economic burden falling on the water company, not individuals.
And we’ve gone further:
Through FOI, we uncovered the modelled allowance Ofwat anticipated United Utilities to spend on S101A applications versus their actual expenditure. The shortfall? £50 million. We’re now working with residents and businesses to change that, equipping them with the evidence, tools, and legal routes to demand proper mains infrastructure.
Already read our connection guide? This report is the evidence that backs it up — and the foundation of our non-mains drainage project, supported by Patagonia. It’s time to stop punishing individuals and start fixing the system.
