We want to raise an urgent alarm about OFWAT’s plans to allow United Utilities (UU) to increase your bills, despite the fact that you’ve already paid for a service that clearly has not been delivered.

A prime example is the analysis conducted by Professor Hammond of Windrush Against Sewage Pollution, which has exposed illegal sewage spilling by water companies across the entire country.
We’ve received clear communication from OFWAT stating that water companies must provide evidence that “they are operating assets in compliance with their permits, funding for which has already been provided through base allowances.”
But just like the water companies marking their own homework, its clearly not in their best interest to tell us the true extent of what’s going on, nor is the Environment Agency doing their job at holding them accountable.
Professor Hammond’s analysis of these illegal spills was even cited by OFWAT when announcing its proposed fines for the industry. OFWAT, the Environment Agency (EA), and the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) all recognise Professor Hammond’s findings as credible and warranting serious attention. They acknowledge it, yet appear to be turning a blind eye.
In Windermere, Professor Hammond has evidence to show that all four of the sites identified for AMP 8 by UU have spilled illegally in recent years. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what UU is attempting to push through and make you pay for.
You can read the full blog and the letter we’ve written to OFWAT and Steve Reed, demanding that they reconsider these plans before it’s too late. But as always, we need your support to ensure our voices are heard.
