Stop the Sell-Off: Protect UK Allotments from Council Sales

Stop the Sell-Off: Protect UK Allotments from Council Sales
The Issue
To: Angela Rayner, Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities
We, the undersigned, demand that Angela Rayner and the UK Government immediately scrap any plans to let local councils sell off public allotments.
This is a betrayal of history, community, and common sense.
Allotments have been protected for over a century, not as assets to be liquidated, but as essential public spaces. Many were gifted or donated by landowners and philanthropists for the benefit of local people, not to be flogged off to developers or used to patch over government underfunding.
They are not "underused land." They are vital lifelines, and in 2025, they’re more important than ever.
Allotments offer affordable, home-grown food during a cost-of-living crisis.
They provide green sanctuary in cities being swallowed by development.
They support physical and mental wellbeing as NHS services struggle.
They help tackle the climate crisis by boosting biodiversity and local sustainability.
Let’s be clear: removing the requirement for councils to seek ministerial approval before selling allotment land would unleash a free-for-all land grab, stripping communities of green space with little oversight or accountability.
This isn't streamlining. It’s asset-stripping. Once they’re gone, they’re gone for good.
We demand that Angela Rayner:
1. Maintain full statutory protections for allotments under existing legislation.
2. Publicly oppose any policy that would make it easier for councils to sell them off.
3. Commit to expanding allotment access, not reducing it.
Selling off allotments is short-sighted, harmful, and utterly at odds with the values of fairness, sustainability, and community empowerment. If the government truly believes in levelling up, protecting green space, and supporting working families, it must start by protecting the land that helps people live better, healthier, and more independent lives.
This is about more than gardening. It’s about public land, public health, and the right to grow.
Sign now and help stop the sell-off of the UK’s allotments - before it’s too late.
