On Friday, January 17th, the DC Eater broke the news that Elon Musk is expected to be the highest bidder at the auction of the Line Hotel taking place on Thursday morning (January 23). Reportedly, Musk plans to turn the hotel and venue into a private club. 

The Line Hotel DC is open to the public and allows our community to gather. The building is historic and enhances Adams Morgan’s unique character. Plans to sell The Line to billionaire Elon Musk and convert it into an exclusive private club would erase its public-facing role, shutting out the very community that made it a success.

This sale risks disrupting the balance of our neighborhood by reducing foot traffic to local businesses and increasing congestion around a venue that has long served as a shared space for residents and visitors. It prioritizes exclusivity and threatens the quality of life that makes Adams Morgan special.

We urge decision-makers to consider the impact of the sale to Elon Musk on Adams Morgan’s character, economy, and quality of life.  We hope the next owner of The Line will respect the community - and a billionaire’s club won’t do that.
