The Issue

To: Coral Springs Mayor Scott Brook, the Coral Springs Commission, and the Coral Springs Center for the Arts
From: Concerned Citizens of Coral Springs and Beyond

We, the undersigned, call on the government-run Coral Springs Center for the Arts to prohibit the sale of merchandise glorifying the terrorist organization Hamas. At the 2025 Florida Muslim Conference, held at the center, the event’s bazaar offered travel mugs featuring the image of deceased Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, the mastermind behind the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, which resulted in the murder of over 1,200 Israelis and the abduction of 251 hostages. Beneath Sinwar’s image, the mug bore the words in Arabic: “The Martyr Leader.”

Hamas has been designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) by the U.S. government. Allowing the sale of merchandise glorifying a terrorist responsible for one of the worst massacres against Jews in modern history is an affront to the values of our community and a direct violation of the Center for the Arts’ role as a public institution funded by taxpayers.

This is not an isolated incident. The 2024 Florida Muslim Conference, which was also set to take place in Coral Springs, was canceled due to security concerns after the host venue determined that advertised speakers were glorifying Hamas following October 7.

Mayor Scott Brook has participated in forums against antisemitism and has publicly condemned antisemitism. In March 2024, Mayor Brook emphasized the importance of speaking out: “I think one of the best ways we combat antisemitism is being vocal. Whether you’re Jewish or not... it’s important that those of us who are not extremists, who are many, that we’re heard.”

The Coral Springs City Commission also issued a powerful statement following October 7, asserting: “Anti-Semitic sentiments and acts have no place in our society. We are proud of the diversity and inclusivity that defines Coral Springs, and we stand shoulder to shoulder with our Jewish residents, advocating for peace and unity.”

Yet, despite these strong words, the Florida Muslim Conference was allowed to take place at a taxpayer-funded facility, and within it, merchandise glorifying a Hamas terrorist leader was sold.

We demand the following actions:
•    Ban the sale of pro-Hamas merchandise at Center for the Arts and all city-run venues.
•    Prohibit the Florida Muslim Conference from using the venue in the future.
•    Publicly condemn the glorification of Yahya Sinwar and Hamas.

We refuse to stay silent. Coral Springs must take a stand against Hamas terrorism – not allow it to be celebrated in our community.
