STOP THE SALE of Millions of Acres of Protected Federal Land (Big Beautiful Bill)

STOP THE SALE of Millions of Acres of Protected Federal Land (Big Beautiful Bill)
The Issue
Millions of acres of protected Federal Land will be sold to private investors and developers if passed in the Big Beautiful Bill this summer. This bill is currently awaiting approval in the Senate. If successfully passed, land that has been preserved for the protection of wildlife and the enjoyment of the public will be sold to the highest bidder.
The bill proposes mandatory land sales in 11 western states, especially targeting Utah and Nevada. Championed by Utah Senator Mike Lee, he claims that the sale of this land will supposedly aid in the housing crisis. However, many critics argue that the majority of the land is uninhabitable, and the sale would be a short term benefit for the wealthy and a permanent loss for the public. Land lost now will be lost forever--it can never be reclaimed.
Perhaps more concerning than the sale of this land is the precedent it sets for other protected Federal Land. If this land is auctioned off, what prevents similar bills from passing in the future? Will any land remain "protected"?
Protecting our natural resources and wildlife is a duty for all citizens, regardless of political alignment. Land should not be sold to satisfy the instant gratification of the present. It should be preserved for the enjoyment and future of all.
In the words of President Theodore Roosevelt, “Here is your country. Cherish these natural wonders, cherish the natural resources, cherish the history and romance as a sacred heritage, for your children and your children's children. Do not let selfish men or greedy interests skin your country of its beauty, its riches or its romance.”
By signing this petition:
- I oppose the sale of protected Federal Land, including the land outlined in the Big Beautiful Bill.
- I insist that all Federal Land sell-off provisions be removed from this bill.
- And, I urge lawmakers to seek legislation that protects against similar attempts to sell protected public land.
