Tweet @Sainsburys http://bit.ly/29oI1jP to pressure them to tackle the mountains of food wasted on farms and in factories, strongly affected by their policies. We’re meeting with Sainsbury’s on Friday to challenge them to make concrete ambitious plans to tackle the food waste in their suppliers. They’re not convinced their customers care about the mountains of food wasted on farms and in factories – if you do care, tell them! http://bit.ly/29oI1jP A colossal 5 million tonnes of food are wasted on farms and in factories in the UK, enough to lift all the hungry people in the UK out of food poverty. It’s often caused by supermarket policies, like rejecting produce for being the wrong size or shape, or incentivising overproduction. Since we last met with Sainsbury’s, another 40,000 of you have signed the petition – welcome! Scotland adopted a historic target to cut food waste, which Stop the Rot advised on. A voluntary agreement in the UK, Courtauld 2025, made the landmark step to include the mountains of food waste on farms in its targets – a big thanks to Stop the Rot supporters who helped campaign for this! Sainsbury’s signed up to Courtauld’s agreement to cut food waste by 20% by 2025. Now we need Sainsbury’s to put their money where their mouth is, and achieve that target or ideally go way beyond it. Challenge Sainsbury’s to act by asking what concrete steps they’re going to take to reduce the 5 million tonnes of food wasted on farms and in factories. Tweet @Sainsburys using #stoptherot – here’s an example tweet: http://bit.ly/29oI1jP Or comment on their facebook posts using #stoptherot: https://www.facebook.com/sainsburys Please say if you are a Sainsbury’s customer! Some suggested questions, or ask your own: - How many tonnes of the 4.9 million tonnes of #foodwaste on farms and factories will you reduce in 2016, & how? Sainsbury's customers care! #stoptherot - Aldi claim that since introducing their Everyday Essentials potatoes in January 2014, they have sold over 34,000 tonnes of potatoes which would have otherwise fallen outside of their specifications for being the wrong size, shape or colour, which has increased their potato suppliers crop use by over 17%. When will Sainsbury’s report how many tonnes of food waste you are saving with your Basics range, and the percentage of its farmers’ crops you are accepting or rejecting? We need meaningful action to tackle the estimated 3 million tonnes of food wasted on farms! Sainsbury's customers care! #stoptherot Keep up the pressure and together we can Stop the Rot!
