California’s landmark Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) was created to protect our air, water, wildlife, and communities from unchecked development. But with the recent passage of SB 131, those protections are being stripped away—silencing local voices and fast-tracking projects that could harm fragile ecosystems.

This new law allows major infrastructure and industrial projects to skip full environmental review and sideline community input. That means less accountability, fewer safeguards, and more risk to California’s biodiversity and public health.

We’re calling on Governor Newsom and the California Legislature to repeal or amend SB 131 and restore strong environmental oversight. Communities deserve a say in what gets built in their backyards, and our natural landscapes shouldn’t be sacrificed in the name of speed.
