Stop the Restrictive Internet Censorship by GoGuardian at Shelton High School
The Issue
As a student at Shelton High School, my learning and research potential is being severely handicapped by the overly restrictive internet censorship implemented through software called GoGuardian. Simple tasks such as applying for library cards, researching historical information, or even looking up certain definitions have become impossible. Accessing the website of a political entity such as the French Government party, information about Cambodian history, and even a simple visit to PetSmart have all faced the same barrier. These severe restrictions have grave implications on our fundamental educational right to explore and gain knowledge.
While internet safety and control over inappropriate content at the school level are valid concerns, the intensity and scope of GoGuardian censorship is reshaping as an educational obstruction, rather than a safety measure. The Center for Democracy and Technology reports that over-blocking does not necessarily equate safety, and can in fact "hinder the educational process" by actively "blocking access to legitimate educational resources". This is clearly happening in our case.
I urge the administration at Shelton High School, and the software provider GoGuardian, to revisit their censorship policies and criteria for blocking websites. A more balanced and reasoned approach needs to be implemented to ensure that the very essence of learning and accessing varied yet legitimate information isn't compromised. Please support us in getting access to the knowledge we need for a comprehensive and balanced education. Sign the petition.
