Quick update on the status of the Yonge-Dundas Square renaming.
Councillor Holyday’s administrative inquiry has revealed that the new physical signage is pegged to cost $105,000 and is not yet in production as they are doing a “design review” at the next board meeting on 5/15. Expected installation of new signage is Fall 2025 but take that with a grain of salt as Moise himself said last year it would be up in August 2024.
Also of note, another heritage crime has been committed, as it is now confirmed the blue Yonge-Dundas Square letters that graced this corner for over 20 years were unceremoniously dumped into the landfill. Mr. Sleath, the British ex-pat who is GM of the square says the “contractor said they were in very poor condition.” Hard to believe when in January 2024, they were shining brightly and beautifully over the square as per my photo below. Heritage Toronto – a city-funded agency – is nowhere to be found.
In the meantime, upstanding citizen John DeMarco continues to press the city privacy clerk for all FOI records pertaining to the renaming and renaming committees. He was originally rebuffed, and only after he involved the provincial privacy commissioner (IPC) did 990 records magically appear. The City is now demanding $1980 to retrieve the records claiming they have an archaic email information system and will need 9 people to pull the records. Obviously, nothing here passes the smell test.
The sordid saga of Sankofagate continues.
