Petitioners,
Recently obtained Freedom of Information (FOI) documents have exposed significant corruption in the process to rename Yonge-Dundas Square, as reported by The Toronto Sun. The investigation reveals that the renaming committee—hand-picked by activist city staff—was deeply biased from the outset.
Key Findings:
A 2023 public consultation, which was supposed to be a crucial step in the process, was deliberately bypassed under orders from Mayor Olivia Chow
The committee demonstrated an immediate bias against Henry Dundas, falsely portraying him as the author of “a shocking orgy of violence and racial hatred.”
Sankofa Street was the committee’s chosen replacement for Dundas Street—an initiative that is now ‘on hold’ at City Hall
The committee openly stated that if public consultation were held, they would not be bound by its outcome
The committee process dragged on for over two years, with no disclosed cost to taxpayers
Further FOI requests will be submitted to uncover the full administrative costs of nearly four years of meetings tied to this renaming process.
This report is an indictment of Mayor Olivia Chow and several city councillors including Amber Morley and Chris Moise, who were complicit in this deeply flawed initiative. The residents and taxpayers of this great city deserve full transparency on how this renaming was perpetuated on unwilling city residents. Mayor Chow and her allies must be held accountable at the next municipal election on October 26, 2026.
