Petitioners,
The erasure of Canadian historical names continues—this time led by one of the most activist-driven school boards in the country, the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). The TDSB has announced plans to rename three schools: Dundas Junior Public School, Ryerson Community School, and Sir John A. Macdonald Collegiate Institute.
Thousands of Torontonians are deeply disturbed by the TDSB’s decision to rename these institutions—a move that undermines both academic and historical integrity. We’ve already witnessed the controversy surrounding Dundas Square, where the vilification of Henry Dundas was based on revisionist history. Activist pressure seeks to erase Canada’s past from our textbooks, public spaces, and institutions. This initiative is a disservice to students, depriving them of the opportunity to critically examine and learn about complex historical figures such as John A. Macdonald and Henry Dundas.
While some TDSB trustees emphasize addressing so-called ‘microaggressions,’ they have overlooked the impact of these changes on students, families, and communities who feel disoriented and alienated by the renaming of their schools. Over 35,000 residents voiced their opposition to rename Yonge-Dundas Square. Yet, the TDSB is inexplicably pressing forward with this historical erasure. Even The Globe and Mail has recognized the foolishness in this initiative: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/toronto/article-toronto-district-school-board-should-reconsider-the-decision-to-rename/
The TDSB must demonstrate true leadership by correcting course and focusing on what truly matters: delivering a rich, inquiry-based education rather than yielding to ideological activism. Schools should be spaces of learning and discovery—not battlegrounds for historical revisionism.
TAKE ACTION:
Write your local TDSB trustee to express your concerns (feel free to copy the above note). Their contact information can be found here: https://www.tdsb.on.ca/leadership/trustees
Sign up to speak at the TDSB’s next meeting on Wednesday, February 12. More details on public delegations can be found here: https://www.tdsb.on.ca/Leadership/Boardroom/Delegations
With enough public pressure, we can show the TDSB that weaponizing the education system for political purposes is unacceptable. Let’s urge them to leave the school names as they are and refocus on education!
