Councillor Stephen Holyday, who was one of the few level-headed councillors to vote against the renaming of Yonge-Dundas, put forth an Administrative Inquiry to the City Manager inquiring about the status of the Yonge-Dundas Square renaming. The response letter said the sign is estimated to cost $200k alone. The letter also revealed additional $600k in branding, programming, and DEI spending. We know these estimates are likely to be much higher when it’s all said and done. The letter also stated they expect to install the new signage before the end of the year.

On May 22, Councillor Holyday submitted a motion to Council requesting the inquiry be referred to the Executive Committee for further study and scrutiny. We say thanks to Councillors Brad Bradford, Jon Burnside, Lily Cheng, Stephen Holyday, Parthi Kandavel, Nick Mantas, Josh Matlow, Frances Nunziata (Chair), James Pasternak, Anthony Perruzza, and Dianne Saxe for correctly voting in favour of this motion. The motion passed 11-10.

THE FIGHT IS NOT OVER. Please continue to put pressure on your local councillor. Email and press upon them that in a time where the city is struggling with crumbling infrastructure, chronic homelessness, and other major issues, we do not appreciate nor support our tax dollars and municipal resources being wasted on empty renaming initiatives which divide our city and misrepresent history. Soon we will be delivering our petition to the city, so now is the time to keep up the pressure!

Please email your councillor and share our petition today. WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE!
