The Issue

The City of Ukiah is planning an 'improvement' project that will mean the removal of beloved trees along School Street. For anyone who walks this stretch, whether for shopping, activities, or simply enjoying an afternoon stroll, these trees offer so much more than just beauty. In the scorching summer months, they provide much-needed shade, transforming a sweltering journey into a pleasant walk. In a region where most trees remain evergreen, these trees, including mature Chinese pistache trees, display a vibrant tapestry of colors during the fall, enchanting both residents and visitors alike.

The importance of these trees extends beyond their aesthetics; they are a vital part of the local ecosystem. Trees help clean the air, reduce urban heat, and keep us connected to nature. Their removal could disrupt these benefits, which are essential for maintaining a balanced environment. Moreover, mature trees add significant value to the community, boosting property prices and contributing to the mental well-being of residents.

While improvement projects are crucial for modernizing infrastructure and enhancing safety, they should not come at the cost of our natural heritage. There are alternative methods for making necessary improvements without sacrificing the trees that are a cherished part of our community's identity. Ukiah is, after all, the "City of Trees".

I urge the City Council of Ukiah and relevant agencies to reconsider their plans and explore approaches that allow for development while preserving these irreplaceable assets. Implementing creative and thoughtful design strategies can achieve this balance, ensuring both progress and environmental stewardship.

Please sign this petition and join in urging the City of Ukiah to find a sustainable solution that meets development needs without erasing the natural beauty that defines our community.
