The proposed cycling lane and greenway part of the Letterkenny Active Travel Project threatens the existence of a beloved landmark in our community: our 90-year-old Sessile Oak tree in Ballyraine. This magnificent tree has presided over the area for nearly a century, its roots running deep into both the soil and the identity of Ballyraine. Locals, supported by members of An Taisce Donegal Local Association, are justifiably worried about the council’s decision, as it does not seem to value our natural heritage. Oak trees are a vital part of our ecosystem. Sessile oaks in particular can live up to 500 years and support hundreds of other species - from fungi to birds, insects and lichens. Furthermore, studies have shown how trees reduce stress and contribute to overall wellbeing - significant factors to consider in town planning (Kaplan, 1992). We therefore ask for immediate action to prevent the removal of this important community symbol and testament to our natural heritage.
