Hey Everyone!

I just wanted to come to you with a HUGE UPDATE! The peacocks will NOT be going to Texas A&M. I was able to speak with Vice Mayor Tolmachoff yesterday, and voiced my concerns and findings in regard to Texas A&M. She was able to speak with the city manager, and they made the decision that NONE of our beloved birds will be fodder for the Texas A&M program.

That being said, our fight for these guys is NOT over. While I thoroughly appreciate what Vice Mayor Tolmachoff did (truly really do appreciate her efforts on this), we still need to figure out what the next steps will be.

Currently, we need to email Councilman Bart Turner (the park is in his district, and his email address is Bturner@glendaleaz.com (623) 930-2249) and ask him to reconsider mass relocation. There are better solutions that will not cost the city obscene amounts of money. Just to keep everyone in the loop, the solutions include but are not limited to:

  • Erecting simple horizontal structures amongst the existing large trees where they can roost at night, instead of roosting on the library. The park lost hundreds of citrus tress a few year back, this loss of habitat drove the peafowl to the library. While planting fully mature trees is likely not a fiscal possibility, erecting simple structures amongst mature trees would be a way to deal with habitat loss without a large cost to the city.
  • Egg addling. This process consists of eggs gently being taken from nests and replaced with "dummy" eggs. This is a process used on MANY farms throughout the US as a way to handle population issues without removing any of the flock members. Females will sit on these dummy eggs for months. Since they have eggs to look after, they will not attempt continued reproduction.
  • Using nets and other protective measures around the fixtures on the library to mitigate any potential issues with peafowl damaging property.

I have had questions regarding how will we get the peacocks to move back to the park? That is a valid question, with a very simple answer. Put out food and water for them near their newly erected structures, give them a few days to realize what is there, and at that point, there should be a pretty quick transition. They went to the library out of necessity not want.

Thank You Everyone! If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please reach out!
