The Issue

TO: THE MAYOR AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE INCORPORATED VILLAGE OF HEMPSTEAD:

We, the undersigned residents, families, and supporters of the Village of Hempstead, respectfully urge you to preserve the Jarred A. Newallo Memorial Skate Park in its current location. We stand firmly in opposition to any proposal to demolish, relocate, or significantly alter the memorial.

Jarred A. Newallo was more than a resident-he was a proud son of the Village of Hempstead whose life embodied community service, dedication and selflessness. Jarred was part of the community- A Boy Scout, Kennedy Park Camp Counselor and volunteer Medic with the Hempstead Fire Department. Jarred devoted his life to serving others.

Jarred had a vision. As an avid skateboarder, he recognized that young people in the Village lacked a safe and dedicated place to skate. For nearly 10 years, Jarred advocated for the creation of a skate park so future generations could enjoy the sport safely. Jarred never was able to see his vision through. He tragically lost his life at 25 in a work-related accident after joining the Town of Hempstead Sanitation Department. In 2019 The Village of Hempstead honored his memory by establishing the memorial skate park in his name.

Today, the park represents far more than concrete and ramps. It is a lasting tribute to a young man who dedicated his life to serving his community. It is a place where residents gather, where young people safely enjoy the sport, and a place his family can reflect on his life and legacy.

Removing or relocating this memorial would not simply change a recreational facility- it would erase a meaningful piece of our community and inflict unnecessary pain on the family and friends who continue to honor Jarred's memory.
