Stop the PSI practical hands-on exam for Kentucky cosmetologists
The Issue
The journey to becoming a certified cosmetologist in Kentucky is already filled with the challenges of mastering skills and knowledge essential for the profession. However, for many aspiring cosmetologists, particularly those with disabilities such as agoraphobia or anxiety, the requirement to travel long distances to Lexington for the PSI practical hands-on exam poses an unnecessary and overwhelming barrier.
This struggle is personal to me and many others who find traveling arduous or even impossible due to various disabilities. Meanwhile, the theory exam is conveniently available in local cities, often at nearby universities. It’s perplexing and frustrating that the option for a local setting is not extended to the practical exam, especially when the demands of the journey become a deterrent more so than the content of the exam itself.
Moreover, if we look at other professions that require practical competence, such as nursing, there are precedents where critical practical skills are taught and assessed within classroom settings. Nurses, who go on to undertake life-saving roles, do not face additional travel burdens for their certification exams. This discrepancy raises the question of why future cosmetologists face such a discrepancy.
If changing the state policy to eliminate the PSI hands-on requirement entirely proves challenging, we propose a solution to organize these practical exams within local universities or accredited institutions. This approach would not only alleviate the difficulties faced by individuals with disabilities but also offer greater accessibility to all aspiring cosmetologists across Kentucky.
Inclusion and accessibility should be cornerstones of our educational and certification systems, ensuring that no aspiring professional is left behind due to logistical challenges. Transitioning to a model that allows practical exams to be taken locally respects and supports all individuals in their pursuit of becoming licensed professionals.
Join us in urging the Kentucky State Board of Cosmetology to reconsider the current setup of the practical exam. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a fairer, more inclusive process that considers the needs of all future cosmetologists. Your support can help us bring about this crucial change.
