The Issue

As a concerned resident of Dorking, I'm deeply troubled by the District Council’s proposal to channel heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) through our residential streets, specifically Chalkpit Lane and Ashcombe Road. This plan directly impacts the health and safety of our community, as it would significantly increase pollution and traffic in areas where our children walk to school daily.

Our local schools, St. Martin’s and The Ashcombe, are surrounded by quiet residential roads designed for local traffic, not the heavy and continuous flow of HGVs. Redirecting these vehicles away from the high street and into our neighborhoods risks the well-being of our children. Increased traffic congestion not only poses a direct safety threat to children going to and from school but also elevates pollution levels, contributing to long-term health risks.

The high street, while busy, is equipped to handle larger volumes of traffic and has been the main thoroughfare for many years. Directing HGVs away from this route in favor of residential areas is not just imprudent, but also detrimental to the future well-being of Dorking’s residents. Studies consistently show that increased exposure to vehicular pollution can lead to chronic respiratory conditions and other health issues, especially among children. According to Public Health England, air pollution is linked to an estimated 28,000 to 36,000 deaths each year in the UK.

Moreover, the noise pollution and physical dangers presented by heavier traffic must not be underestimated. Our community deserves safer streets, and our children's health should be a priority. It's essential that the Council re-evaluates its Masterplan in light of these considerations and seeks alternatives that preserve the sanctity of our residential areas.

I call on Dorking residents and others who care about our community to demand immediate action from the District Council to reconsider these plans.
