The Issue

We call for North Lanarkshire Council to revoke planning permission for the construction of AI data centres without the input of local residents or an environmental impact assessment. Residents and the landscape have already suffered consequences from the steelworks plant.

Apatura have proposed plans for a 550MW AI data centre alongside a 650MW battery energy storage system in North Lanarkshire. This "campus" will span 160 acres, equivalent to 100 football pitches. The power used could supply over 1.2 million homes. If approved, these plans will go ahead without appropriate environmental impact checks or community consultation. These centres bring large amounts of noise and light pollution which has not been disclosed to locals.

This project will have an unprecedented environmental impact

Will be built on ground contaminated by previous steelworks
North Lanarkshire Council has decided there is no need for environmental impact assessment
Will be built on top of 3 identified badger sets
Bee colonies have just been introduced to the area to promote biodiversity in ancient woodland
Area contains protected animals and tree species
