Stop the proposed high rise development in our community and restore our Heritage Listing
The issue
We, the undersigned residents, ratepayers, and community members, respectfully petition Canada Bay Council to:
Reject or suspend the proposed 10-storey development at 9-15 Leicester Avenue, Strathfield, pending a comprehensive and transparent review of its impacts on local infrastructure, traffic, neighbourhood amenity, heritage values, and community wellbeing.
Retain and protect the heritage listing of 7 Leicester Avenue which has retained the heritage features and ensure that the historic character of Leicester Avenue, the Strathfield Triangle, and surrounding streets is preserved for future generations. The Heritage Listing was removed without any notification to the owners so that an underhand development proposal could go ahead. The property sits on land that was owned by Captain Rowley. Captain Thomas Rowley arrived in Sydney in February 1792 aboard the transport ship Pitt an adjutant and later captain in the New South Wales Corp. Leicester Avenue, Manson Rd, Swan Avenue and the Strathfield Triangle is also the locale for many working class European refugees including our family who escaped war torn Europe and settled here. They too made significant contributions to Australian society.
Help us please to save this home.
We also want council to Investigate and enforce compliance relating to alleged unlawful building use, boarding house operations, unapproved structures, fire safety obligations, and property maintenance issues within the precinct.
Take immediate action to address ongoing illegal dumping, abandoned shopping trolleys, graffiti, footpath defects, and other public amenity concerns that have been repeatedly raised by residents.
Ensure that all residents and property owners are treated fairly and consistently through transparent, impartial, and equitable enforcement of planning, parking, maintenance, and compliance requirements.
Undertake genuine community consultation before proceeding with significant redevelopment proposals that will permanently alter the character and liveability of the area.
We believe that responsible planning should balance housing needs with heritage conservation, environmental sustainability, public safety, and the rights of existing residents. We therefore call upon Canada Bay Council to act on our submission to Council.
So many beautiful homes have already been lost.
These are the unfair aspects that we and this community have had to contend with:
Tradespeople to our property have been booked while working on our property despite the fact that we have no driveway unlike the bulk of properties on the street while the same rules have not been applied to the properties of developers who have drievways.
Intimadation tactics to force us to sell including having our gate kicked in and terrazzo steps being smashed.
Slum landlords who have let properties deteriorate and remain unkept
Landlords who have benefitted from illegal boarding structures which were approved by Canada Bay Council under false use declarations.
No real consultation with the Community regarding precinct level changes.
