The Issue

The promotion of unhealthy relationships with food is a detrimental effect of diet culture. There are various factors that contribute to this negative consequence, but a crucial contributor is the influence that social media has. Social media has become a common part of the majority of the population’s everyday life. What is seen on people’s feeds daily is what often has authority over individuals’ minds. Beth Sissons overviews in the article “Diet Culture: What It Is, Its Effects, and How to Overcome It” the idealization of thinness and fearmongering of diet culture that is spread through the masses of media. This article dives into the pervasive idea of thin equaling the societal norm (Sissions). This is a highlight on the showcase of unrealistic body and restrictive eating standards within society. Additionally, platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, etc. are filled with influencers displaying their healthy lifestyles. In these displays, often influencers will show “What they eat in a day” posts. These posts lead to individuals gaining insecurities over their diets along with possibly leading to an overexaggerated fixation on eating solely healthy foods. This is a silent epidemic that is widely unknown called orthorexia nervosa. As said by Katey Davidson and Alina Petre “A person with the disorder may focus so much on optimal nutrition that it impacts other aspects of their life.” Although it may seem to be a “healthy” fixation or discipline, there is often no joy when the “health” journey gets to this point of obsession. This severely concerning and intrusive aspect of social media also induces individuals to have insecurities regarding their body type. It also introduces weight stigma. Furthermore, it regularly leads to not only orthorexia nervosa, but also anorexia nervosa, bulimia, binge eating disorder, and so many other disordered eating conditions. Overall, the comparison and pressure that is fostered by social media is a constantly looming and dangerously extensive issue.
