Oldham County has the wonderful tagline of "quietly amazing." Our peaceful countryside, cherished farmlands, and residential community define who we are. Today, we stand on the brink of a drastic change - the construction of a Data Center at 3557 N Hwy 53 that sits right on Harrods Creek. The current plan will consist of 8 buildings with each building being 75' tall and 5 acres in size. This project threatens to disrupt not only our "quietly amazing" county, but also places us at the risk of health hazards and environmental pollution.
There are potential health risks associated with Data Centers with more data to come in our future as studies continue. Prolonged exposure to electromagnetic fields from the high power demand can result in higher cancer rates, neurological and cognitive effects, and psychiatric problems. Emissions from generators result in poor air quality effecting residents with respiratory disorders and our environment.
It is crucial to address the proposed Data Center's impact on Harrods Creek. Large scale Data Centers require approximately 450,000 gallons of water per day. This will impact our watershed with the potential of drying out Harrods Creek during periods of drought. There is the risk of harming our aquatic life as well with the pollution from cooling water blow down and heating up the water temperature. With Kentucky passing SB 89 in February 2025 Harrods Creek would no longer be considered a protected creek, which makes it our responsibility to protect it.
Noise and light pollution will put a strain on our residents, livestock, wildlife, and honeybees. The constant humming of high power lines, amplified by monthly generator checks, will ruin the tranquility of our community. The light pollution associated with 24/7 security intrudes on our night sky, disrupts our natural habitat, and can interfere with sleep of nearby residents.
A significant part of Oldham County's charm lies in its agricultural zoning. Changing an agricultural/residential zoned area to a commercially zoned property will strip our community of its unique identity. This will also lead the way to more zoning changes in the future. Our plea is twofold - to protect our zoning laws and to utilize available lots within already commercialized areas.
Currently data centers account for 4% of the power usage in the United States and predicted to reach 8% by 2030. With the addition of a data center in Oldham County LG&E/KU will need to put in a new power grid, which will result in rising electricity prices for the residents.
We ask for your support to halt the construction of this Data Center, as we strive to protect the sanctity, health, and tranquility of our county. Please add your signature to this petition to help preserve the "quietly amazing" Oldham County.
