The Issue
Living in a 55 plus community in Pinellas County, I've witnessed first-hand the devastating effects of the actions taken by the Pinellas County Housing Authority. Countless seniors, many of whom rely solely on Social Security for their income, are being forced from their homes due to rent hikes and reduced support, exacerbating the vulnerabilities they already face.
This issue affects not only myself but hundreds of seniors who have spent their lives contributing to society and deserve stability and dignity in their retirement years. It's heartbreaking to see friends and neighbors living in fear of losing their homes, a fear no senior should have to face.
Statistics show that Florida has one of the highest percentage of elderly residents, and housing affordability remains a crucial challenge. With Social Security as the primary source of income for many, the aggressive policies of the Housing Authority are simply untenable. According to a 2020 AARP report, nearly 50% of older adults in the U.S. are housing cost-burdened, paying more than 30% of their income on rent and utilities.
The solution lies in implementing fair housing practices that protect our seniors, ensuring they are not priced out of their homes. We need a cap on rent increases tied to Social Security cost-of-living adjustments and additional support services to assist low-income seniors. Furthermore, the Pinellas County Housing Authority must engage with the community to find balanced solutions that safeguard the well-being of its senior residents.
Join me in calling on the Pinellas County Housing Authority to halt these harmful practices and work towards policies that prioritize the welfare of its senior population. Please sign this petition and help us protect and preserve the homes and dignity of our seniors.
