STOP THE PHONE BAN IN FITCHBURG PUBLIC SCHOOLS

STOP THE PHONE BAN IN FITCHBURG PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Issue
Fitchburg Public Schools are putting a ban on phones next school year.
"Because students don't pay attention."
"Because the youths Mental Health crisis is important."
"Because students only talk to each other through a screen."
A phone can be a lifeline for students and parents during a crisis, such as a school shooting, medical emergency, or natural disaster. They enable real time communication that school wide systems may not provide quickly enough.
Allowing students to have a phone gives parents peace of mind that they can reach their child or be reached by them at any time. This is particularly important for coordinating rides and activities after school.
Students can use phones to anonymously report bullying or safety concerns, providing critical information to school administrators. Which is why they made the Stop-it app.
Students can use phones to collaborate on projects through messaging apps, shared documents, and other productivity tools.
Educational apps allow students to progress at their own pace, and features like audio recording can support auditory learners or those who need to review lessons.
Banning phones misses the opportunity to teach students responsible digital citizenship. Educators can guide students on how to use technology appropriately, evaluate online sources, and manage their screen time.
For most modern careers, digital literacy is a fundamental requirement. Integrating phones into the learning experience prepares students for a tech driven workplace.
An overly strict ban can create an adversarial environment, damaging the trust between teachers and students.
And so much more. In conclusion, the ban that their putting on cell phones isn't necessary. It was never necessary. Students shouldnt have to lock away their devices for 7 hours a day.
