Stop the phone ban at RKYHS

The Issue

In today’s digital world, smartphones are not just accessories. They are essential tools for learning, communication, and social connection. Even though we have computers available in our classrooms, smartphones provide functions that school devices cannot fully replace. Because of this, the school’s plan to ban phones starting in January is raising serious concerns for many students.

While classroom computers are useful for assignments, smartphones give us quick and personal access to information. They help us check schedules, review homework, and use educational apps without needing to sign into a full computer every time. Phones also support better organization, helping us manage school responsibilities more efficiently.

Most importantly, smartphones are key socializing tools. They allow us to communicate with friends, classmates, and family throughout the day. Staying connected is a major part of maintaining our mental well-being and building a supportive school environment. Phones help us coordinate group work, reach out when we need help, and stay in touch with our support systems. For students with health needs or after-school responsibilities, having direct contact with family is not optional it is necessary for safety and peace of mind.

We respectfully ask the school administration to reconsider the planned January ban and adopt a policy that reflects how students actually use technology today.
