Stop the Personal Devices Policy

Stop the Personal Devices Policy
The Issue
Hello, thank you for taking the time to consider supporting our cause. I am not the greatest writer, and if you would like a more coherent description of the problem at hand, I suggest you read this writing by several CRHS students, or this writing, by a SLHS student.
Next year (2024-25), Katy ISD will implement a policy, called 1:1. This policy will give secondary students school devices, but will ban personal device usage, and force students to use slow, buggy, and limited school Chromebooks.
This will impact students with cellphones that wish to keep in contact with their families, the majority of the students here, and will severely limit being able to do afterschool activities. This also detracts from student's safety, as if a school shooter attempts to murder students, they would have no way of calling the authorities or contacting their parents.
This will also impact computer science students. They won't be able to do any work for computer science, which has some of the most homework assigned by any class.
Students that use devices to take notes or keep a schedule will also be negatively impacted by this policy, as it will be a lot slower on paper.
This will also be very difficult to enforce, as most students will not follow this policy. Students will also break the Chromebook, costing the schools lots of taxpayer money. Also, students will all use proxies. :)
Students that care about privacy will also be very negatively impacted. You are required to have a Google made device with a working microphone and camera, and schools have a history of not respecting students' privacy. Personally, I'm covering the Chromebook in tin foil the second I get home, but for some students this isn't a viable option. Chromebooks also collect a lot of user data, and I don't feel comfortable nor did I consent to sharing that data with Google or Katyisd.
What you can do about it:
- Send emails: The school board and Katyisd staff all have public emails, and I'm sure a few emails would help motivate them to make a change.
- Share this petition: The more people that are aware of this, the more power we will have in influencing their decision.
- Share with news. This is another questionable moral and legal decision made by Katyisd, and local news groups love covering the board's decisions.
