The Issue

Growing up as a student involved in numerous extracurricular activities, there have been countless occasions where activities have been unexpectedly canceled or rescheduled. In such moments, being able to immediately contact my parents is crucial. However, a permanent ban on cell phones in schools strips students of this essential lifeline, leaving them unable to make necessary adjustments or inform their family members of changes. This law keeps teens from using phones at lunch, study hall, and in the hallways and requires all public K-12 schools to create policies prohibiting student cell phone use during the instructional day by January 1, 2026, signed by governor Mike Dewine

Cell phones are an integral part of modern life and communication. They are not just devices for social interactions or distractions but essential tools for safety and connectivity. According to the Pew Research Center, over 95% of teenagers in the United States own a smartphone. This widespread adoption highlights the importance and reliance on these devices, especially for safety and instant communication.

Moreover, in emergency situations, having immediate access to a cell phone can make a critical difference. With incidents of school lockdowns and emergencies sadly becoming more frequent, being able to quickly inform parents or authorities can be a matter of life and death. It's imperative to balance the need for in-class focus with the undeniable necessity of ensuring students' safety and ability to communicate.

Instead of an outright ban, schools could enforce reasonable usage policies that prevent misuse while allowing cell phones for important communications. These policies could include designated times and areas for phone use, ensuring that students are reachable when necessary without disrupting the educational environment.

Yes, cell phones have the potential to distract, but education systems should focus on how these devices can be integrated responsibly. Technology runs the world, and equipping students to use it responsibly is key to their future success

Outright banning phones in schools is a lazy approach because it ignores how essential they are to student safety and communication. When students aren’t allowed to have their phones, they lose a reliable way to contact parents during emergencies, schedule changes, or unexpected situations after school. Instead of creating thoughtful guidelines for appropriate use, a blanket ban removes an important safety tool and leaves students dependent on limited school communication systems that aren’t always fast or accessible. By taking the easy way out, schools hinder students’ ability to stay connected, responsible, and safe.

Let’s stand together to keep safety and communication a priority in our schools. Sign this petition to advocate for balanced policies that protect students' ability to communicate while maintaining the integrity of the educational environment.
