Urgent – Please Object Closing Date Thursday 21st May –  Another environmentally damaging carbon capture scheme, affecting the Dee Estuary. Please object to the New Connah’s Quay Power Station, a gas fired power station which proposes to capture the carbon dioxide generated and dump it under Liverpool Bay via the HYNET CO2 pipeline. This pipeline is being constructed by the same energy firm, Progressive Energy, who are proposing the Peak Cluster CO2 pipeline. (the photo is an artists impression of the proposed power station)

Amongst the many concerns about this project which promotes the extended use of fossil fuels (instead of transitioning to new sustainable energy generation) are the massive environmental impacts that it will have on the internationally important and protected habitat on the  Dee Estuary RAMSAR site.

The company behind the power station, Uniper, have admitted that they can not avoid damaging the Dee Estuary but are asking for permission to go ahead anyway.

Natural England, Natural Resources Wales and Flintshire County Council have all told the Planning Inspectorate that Uniper’s plans for mitigating environmental damage do not go far enough

Nitrogen pollution from the proposed station would affect 245 hectares of saltmarsh within the Dee Estuary alone, and 445 hectares when added to the effects of other developments in the area.

There are also concerns about effects on Curlew, a red - listed bird of conservation concern, which uses fields next to the existing power station.

Natural Resources Wales are calling for comments on the application for an environmental permit for the power station by 21st May. You can email your comments to :
