Stop the Overdevelopment at Oldham

Stop the Overdevelopment at Oldham
The Issue
Living in the Riverside area of East Providence, RI has always been a source of pride for me due to its serene environment and stable community. However, recently I found out that Mayor Bob DaSilva plans to convert the former Oldham Elementary School into low-income housing. This change not only threatens the privacy that my neighborhood cherishes, but it also poses a risk to our property values.
The intention to repurpose Oldham Elementary into housing for low-income residents may seem noble at first glance. However, the reality is that our community is being asked to shoulder an unexpected and significant change that has not been thoroughly discussed with all stakeholders involved. There are concerns about increased traffic, pressure on local resources, and the alteration of our community's character.
Original talks indicated that the space could be used as an incubator for new small businesses as well as a community and recreational facility. These ideas would be more suitable for the neighborhood specifically our children. It is crucial for Mayor DaSilva and local authorities to explore alternative solutions that address housing needs without compromising the existing neighborhoods.
Statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau have shown that similar conversions in other areas led to a drop in property values and heightened community tension. The proposed site is nestled in a predominantly residential part of Riverside, making it imperative to consider the long-term ramifications on the locality.
Join me in urging Mayor DaSilva and the city council to reconsider and involve the community in the decision-making process regarding the future of Oldham Elementary School. Your support and signature can make a difference in preserving the character of Riverside and ensuring that development in our area is both equitable and sustainable. Please sign this petition to protect our neighborhood's integrity and future.
