Stop the Overcrowding at Norman S. Edelcup Sunny Isles Beach K-8

Stop the Overcrowding at Norman S. Edelcup Sunny Isles Beach K-8
The Issue
Norman S. Edelcup Sunny Isles Beach K-8 public school is in a STATE OF EMERGENCY!
- OUR CHILDREN’S EDUCATION HAS DETERIORATED.
- OUR TEACHERS ARE LEAVING.
- OUR CITY MAY LOSE ITS MIDDLE SCHOOL.
- OUR CHILDREN ARE UNSAFE.
- OUR SCHOOL BOUNDARY MAY CHANGE.
- OUR SCHOOL LACKS RESOURCES AND STAFF.
- OUR CHILDREN ARE BEING LEFT BEHIND.
- OUR OVERCROWDING IS UNSUSTAINABLE.
NSE SIB K-8 is over *131% capacity* and on a trajectory to continue growing with a total allowed capacity of 1769, but with an enrollment of 2320. We are the #1 most overcrowded school in the county.
The ratio of teachers – children is almost double the state law. FLORIDA LAW states that classroom size should NOT exceed *18 students* per each teacher, however many of our kids have over *30+ students* with one teacher.
Overcrowding is at the root of all the other noteworthy issues we face at our local public school and the overall teacher shortage exacerbates it all. Research has also linked overcrowded schools to increased BULLYING.
We are all aware that many current students are non-residents. Hundreds of students who do not live within the school’s district boundaries (Sunny Isles Beach and Golden Beach) are attending the school as a result of FRAUD at the time of enrollment or failure to TRANSFER OUT when moving out of the boundaries. Not only is this affecting the QUALITY OF EDUCATION, but it is affecting ALL residents' QUALITY OF LIFE from the extreme amount of traffic that the school generates each day because of out-of-boundary incoming traffic.
The Sunny Isles Beach community is petitioning the MDCPS to conduct an Address Verification Plan and Enforcement for all students, new and existing. This issue (and our community) demands immediate implementation and that the address verification process begin this year without delay to continue on an annual basis henceforth. Immediate action and implementation is required so that families have enough time to plan ahead for the upcoming school year.
