The Kiama and South Coast to be turned into an industrial power plant.
Background: On 14 August 2023, it was announced that the coastline from Gerringong to North of Wollongong is slated for inclusion as an offshore wind turbine zone by the Commonwealth Government. After so much community opposition to previous proposals from foreign companies to build turbines, it seem the government and member Fiona Phillips are not listening.

This consultation website has of things of note, including:
- That the turbines will be visible from the shore and more so at higher elevation.
- Little to no study done on whale migration effects.
- The ridiculous claim, from one obscure study in the USA, that these turbines may be good for tourism.
- Refusal to rule out banning fishing in the area.
- Highlighting the enormous infrastructure that will need to be built onshore.
Petition.
We call upon the Federal Government to cancel the proposed wind turbine area of the NSW South Coast and the Kiama Area. We call up on Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips to stand up for her electorate.
These will not go away. Once this power station is built, only further industrialisation will continue, and very likely onshore. This is expressly mentioned on the government’s website.
They will be there when we swim. When we surf. When we fish. When we watch whales. When we walk the dog after a hard day’s work. Their lights will flash all night. Their blades will flash all day. There will be no escape. It will be a disfigurement of the sea and a scar on our hearts. They will be relentless. If this is built, it will be 50 years before we will ever hope to have a pristine coast line again, if ever.
If built, the result will be:
- Environmental and habitat degradations on land an at sea.
- Tourism decline and livelihood destruction.
- Local amenity destruction.
- A complete upheaval of a beautiful part of the world.
The Industrial wind power station zone must be either cancelled entirely, moved unseen beyond the horizon, or at best be no further south than Bass Point. It should not be any further south than the NSW Renewable Energy Zone.
Foreign companies and businesses, residents and governments from Wollongong should not have a say on what happens in Kiama. This is not a comment on renewable energy, this is a defence against an attack on our homes and our coastline.
This environmental and social destruction must be stopped!
