Stop the Nurse Reassignment at Richland School District

Stop the Nurse Reassignment at Richland School District
The Issue
The rapport these kids have with their assigned nurses is critical to their health and well-being. For years, children in the Richland School District High School and Elementary have trusted their school nurses with not only their physical health concerns but also their emotional and mental health needs. School nurses become confidants and friends, providing a safe haven in what can often be a tumultuous school environment.
Recently, our community was informed of a sudden and uncommunicated decision by the school superintendent to switch the roles of the current high school and elementary school nurses. This decision, made without any proper discussion or community consultation, threatens to disrupt the delicate trust and relationships that have been carefully nurtured over the years.
The impact of a school nurse goes beyond bandages and medications; they play a crucial role in identifying mental health issues, offering emotional support, and being a consistent reassuring presence. Trust isn't built overnight, and changing a nurse may seem like a budget or administrative decision, but it touches the very core of what makes our schools feel like a second home.
With mental health crises increasing among school children, the need for stable, trusted relationships is more paramount than ever. According to the National Association of School Nurses, school nurses are instrumental in reducing absenteeism by addressing mental and physical health needs. Disrupting these established connections could potentially increase absenteeism and general discontent among students.
We are standing together to request that these nurse positions remain as they are to continue providing stable and reliable care that our students desperately need. We respectfully ask the superintendent to reconsider this decision and engage in meaningful dialogue with the community.
Please support our children’s health and emotional well-being by keeping their trusted nurses in their current positions. Sign this petition to let your voice be heard.
