As we enter the local election period, abuse and intimidation directed at candidates and their teams has sadly become more frequent, with many stepping forward to serve their communities now facing real threats to their safety. This is not just deeply wrong — it endangers the health of our democracy.

That’s why Compassion in Politics developed a pledge for those willing to commit to campaigning with kindness, respect, and decency.

Now, in partnership with the Jo Cox Foundation, we’re proud to see the Civility Pledge recognised at the highest levels of Government as a vital part of the solution.

Just last week, the Security Minister Dan Jarvis publicly recognised the rising tide of harassment faced by candidates. In response, the Government has introduced new support measures: for the first time, dedicated police officers are in place across the country to advise candidates on personal safety. Known as Force Elected-Official Advisers (FEOAs), these officers are providing briefings, guidance, and crucial reassurance throughout the campaign period.

In his recent statement, the Security Minister Dan Jarvis not only reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to protecting candidates, but also acknowledged the importance of our Civility Pledge, launched in partnership with the Jo Cox Foundation, as part of a safer, more respectful political culture.

The Jo Cox Civility Commission’s recommendations are also being taken seriously by Parliament, the Electoral Commission, and national government — signalling a wider cultural shift towards safer, more compassionate politics. But to truly embed these changes, we must keep pushing forward. That’s where you come in.

Your donation will help us reach more candidates, encourage more signatories to the Civility Pledge, and ensure this election is not only free and fair, but safe and respectful.

Your support will help us:

  • Raise awareness of the Civility Pledge among thousands of candidates and voters,

  • Get MPs and Councillors signed up to the pledge,

  • Push back against the normalisation of abuse in political life.

We are proud to be part of a growing movement that refuses to accept hostility as the norm. As Will Fletcher, CEO of the Jo Cox Foundation, put it: “We all have a responsibility for changing the perception that elected representatives are acceptable targets of abuse and intimidation.”

Let’s make this local election a turning point. Let’s stand together for compassion, dignity, and respect in politics.

With heartfelt thanks,
Jennifer Nadel
