There was an elephant in the room at Tuesday night’s election debate.
Change.
For all the talk of taxes, immigration, and pensions, neither leader spoke about one of the most important issues that face our country: the way we do politics.
This is what determines everything else.
When we still have a politics high on conflict, low on trust, and lacking in public engagement, we won’t get good policies. We won’t get real change.
That is why I have written a piece for Byline Times setting out exactly what a new politics could look like.
Compassion in Politics has some very simple immediate steps an incoming government could take and you can read about them here. They’d cost very little and would herald an end to Westminster’s dysfunctional, tribal, conflict based approach to politics.
To us, it’s all about bringing basic human values back into the political system.
That means promoting collaboration, empowering new voices, cultivating wise decision-making, and developing a spirit of solidarity between MPs and those they serve.
We cannot solve the complex problems our country faces with a conflict based, adversarial Punch-and-Judy style politics.
How we do politics really matters. We won’t get good policy outcomes from a broken political system. If we want a better, brighter future we need to do politics differently.
If you agree, we’d really appreciate your support. We are getting our message out there and we need to make sure it’s heard by the politicians who will soon be in charge.
Everything we do is funded by our fantastic supporters. If you can give anything to support our Election Campaign Fund, please donate here.
Kind regards
