Stop the mistreatment in Oklahoma County Jail

Stop the mistreatment in Oklahoma County Jail
The Issue
Daryl Clinton a 56-year-old man who was an amputee died while in custody of Oklahoma County on August 10, 2019, due to the neglect and mistreatment of the staff there. Mr. Clinton was a native Oklahoman who grew up in Langston, Oklahoma. He had 3 brothers and 2 sisters and several nieces and nephews who all loved him. All that my family really wants is justice for my uncle because he shouldn’t have died the way he did.
The county stated that he died from cardiac arrest which is most definitely a lie because his death certificate clearly states that he died of blunt force trauma of the cervical spine, if the county is not guilty of any wrongdoing or foul play then why lie? They are clearly covering up what took place while my uncle was in their custody. The following statement was given by a neurologist concerning my uncles condition about how he injured himself in a motor vehicle accident and while he was in jail over the next 5 days his health declined, and his condition worsened. He wasn’t able to feed himself, he wasn’t able to move his hands, he was left in his own feces for hours and hadn’t urinated in several days. Also, he asked for help but most of the staff refused to help him and get him the medical attention that he needed. He was slowly being paralyzed and the staff was saying that he was “faking.” He would remain in the same position for hours because he couldn’t do anything for himself. The discharge papers from the hospital clearly stated that he needed to be seen within 24 hours if he started to get worse. That never happened until it was too late.
I set up this petition seeking truth and justice regarding what happened to my uncle while in custody of Oklahoma County. We are asking for truth and transparency so that this doesn’t happen to anyone else’s loved one. No one should have to suffer losing a family member simply because they went to jail. My family is also asking for upgrades of the facility and extensive training for the employees when it comes to inmates in dire need especially older inmates with medical conditions. There needs to be some compassion for inmates regardless of there criminal record. So many people have died in the Oklahoma County jail due to mistreatment and/or neglect. We are all human beings and should be treated as such. All we are asking for is basic compassion, humanity and justice for all the inmates who have died in the county jail in the past few years. Sad to say our state has made national headlines with the story even being featured in USA Today on July 21, 2023 about how Oklahoma County jail became one of the “deadliest in the country” under the title of “Broken Trust.” Going to jail should not be a death sentence. Please take the time to sign this petition and help us to make a change.
