Stop the mid‑program addition of extra placement hours for the Mohawk College PN program

Stop the mid‑program addition of extra placement hours for the Mohawk College PN program
The Issue
We will be the Fall 2026 semester 4 Practical Nursing cohort at Wentworth Heights, Tansley Woods and IAHS for Mohawk College. We are requesting that the college reconsider the recent decision to add extra placement hours partway through our program. This change, introduced by Associate Dean Lindsay Anderson, was made after we had already begun our studies and it places many of us in difficult and unfair situations.
Students enrolled in this program made commitments based on the original requirements. Many of us planned our work schedules, family responsibilities, transportation, and finances around the expectations that were clearly outlined at the start. Changing the placement hours midway through the program creates significant hardship, especially for those who cannot easily rearrange their lives to accommodate additional unpaid hours.
Furthermore, some students would not have enrolled in this program at all had these new requirements been disclosed from the beginning. Mid‑program changes undermine transparency and trust, and they create inequitable conditions for current students compared to future cohorts who will know the full expectations before enrolling.
We are asking the college to:
- Reconsider or reverse the added placement hours for current students, or
- Provide reasonable accommodations or alternatives for those who cannot meet the new requirements due to work, caregiving, or financial constraints.
We believe in the value of our education and our future careers, but we also believe that program requirements should remain consistent for the students who have already committed to them. Fairness, transparency, and respect for students’ circumstances must guide decisions that affect our academic and personal lives.
By signing this petition, you are supporting a call for a fair and reasonable solution that honors the commitments students made when they enrolled.
