Stop the massive data center in Stroudsburg, PA

Stop the massive data center in Stroudsburg, PA
The Issue
Being developed under the name: SMITHFIELD GATEWAY PROJECT
Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg, a peaceful and picturesque area in the heart of Pennsylvania, is shocked by plans for a massive data center being proposed right in our backyards. While technology and data centers are crucial for modern communication, the scale of this project threatens to alter our community's landscape irreparably, impacting the environment, economy, and our daily lives.
The proposed data center is set to occupy vast stretches of land, leading to significant deforestation and loss of wildlife habitat. This large-scale environmental disruption not only endangers local flora and fauna but also contributes to increased carbon emissions, counteracting efforts to combat climate change. Reports and studies show that data centers are significant energy consumers, responsible for around 2% of global CO2 emissions, similar to the airline industry.
Moreover, the noise and light pollution stemming from such facilities are well-documented and can affect both human health and the wellbeing of wildlife. Imagine the constant hum of machinery, bright lights piercing through the serenity of the night, disrupting both our sleep and the natural behavioral patterns of nocturnal animals.
Economically, while some may argue that this development could bring jobs, such employment opportunities are often minimal, requiring highly specialized skills. The majority of the promised economic benefits bypass local communities, benefiting primarily the corporations involved. In other towns where data centers have been established, there is evidence showing minimal positive impacts on local economies.
The charm of the Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg communities lie in close-knit community, natural beauty, and rural tranquility. This development could open the door to further industrial expansion, slowly eroding the character and appeal of our area.
We call upon the local government, city planners, and residents to protect Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg from this unsustainable and invasive development. Alternative, sustainable solutions should be explored, such as repurposing existing structures or investing in greener technology solutions that align with our community values.
Let us stand together and ensure that our town doesn't become just another industrial hub. Sign this petition to voice your opposition to the proposed data center and to show support for preserving the unique character and environment of Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg, PA. Together, we can make a difference.

RE: UPDATE
Data Center Ordinance Update
Zoning changed to M1 conditional use.
M1 is light industrial. Data Centers belong in heavy industry zoning.
The new proposed area looks to be somewhere on Papermill Road near the Minisink soccer field.
