The Issue

Decades ago, when District Councils were first introduced in our community, I remember clearly how they made our local councillors more remote and far less representative of us, the local people. Since then, we have seen a gradual erosion of accountability and a widening gap between elected officials and their constituents. Now, with yet another proposed local government reorganisation on the table, we face the same issues again, but potentially on an even larger scale. This reorganisation doesn't need a tweak or a review—it needs to be stopped outright.

The current proposal, which aims to further centralise decision-making powers, will leave many communities in the Warwickshire area without a direct line to those in positions of authority. Our concerns, needs, and aspirations risk getting lost in the shuffle of a broader bureaucratic framework that takes decisions out of local hands. This is particularly significant at a time when localised decision-making is more crucial than ever, especially in light of economic challenges and unique regional needs.

Studies by the Local Government Research Unit and multiple think tanks have shown that smaller, decentralised councils provide better responsiveness and more tailored governance to their respective communities. For instance, they found that towns in other regions with a strong local council structure experienced higher satisfaction rates with decisions that directly affect their way of life. Thus, bringing another layer of overarching governance will only stifle the progress and prosperity of Warwickshire and other affected localities.

We need a system that prioritises people over politics, where the voices of local residents are heard and respected. We need a system where our representatives are not just politically accountable, but also physically accessible. To achieve this, it is crucial to maintain and improve our current structures instead of dismantling them in favor of hypothetical efficiencies that rarely deliver in practice.

Our action can make a difference. By stopping this reorganisation, we protect our community's ability to govern itself, ensuring that our representatives truly reflect the picture of our diverse and vibrant towns and villages.

Join me in rejecting this unnecessary local government reorganisation. Let’s stand up for a system that keeps local governance local. Sign this petition and help us put a halt to this plan before it severely impacts our community.
